There’s plenty of research on why people cheat on their significant others. But now, Rutgers researchers are looking at why people stay faithful to their spouses instead. One reason they may have identified is that people who are happily in a relationship view those outside the relationship as less attractive than others may see them.

“We often hear about the reasons why people cheat or divorce and we spend less time exploring the factors that help people stay together,” Cole says. “This study suggests that there are processes that may occur outside of conscious awareness to make it easier to stay committed to one’s partner.”
