David S. Goodsell, a research professor at Rutgers and associate professor of molecular biology at the Scripps Research Institute, was featured on the Smithsonian website for his watercolor and ink depictions of what it might look like when the Zika virus infects a cell.

“I said to myself: What would it look like if we could blow up a portion of the cell and see the molecules?” Goodsell says. His goal was “to get back to looking at the big picture of science,” he says.
